"John Evans of Welsh descent and his wife Frances of Scotch descent came to Virginia from near Baltimore, Maryland ca 1805/6. He was a farmer and rented land and at times was employed by plantation owners who owned the property, the labor mostly being done by slaves. At times he was ordered by masters to punish slaves - he would take them to a safe place, tie the slave to a tree, hit the tree the required number of licks telling the negro to yell every lick. For this kindness he was well liked by slaves and had little trouble with them. Tho he could not read or write he was very religous and at times had meeting repeating verses from the Bible, giving out hymns and leading in singing. He made great effort to give his children some schooling by having them attending for short periods of time as he could afford, so their education was mostly reading and writing, the common schooling at the time. . . "

Another family groupsheet that I found including John Evans 1776 said that he had been ill for 200 days before dying with consumption.
