Notes for Jonathan Van Tuyl

Descendants of
Jonathan Van Tuyl
Of Orange Co, Greenville Twp, NY
The earliest record of Van Tuyls in the Greenville twp area of Orange Co, NY is of a Jonathan Van Tuyl who settled in the area before the Revolution. Greenville twp was formed from the older Minisink twp in 1854, therefore early references are to Minisink, recognizing that this refers to the area now called Greenville. Ruttenbaer and Clark's History of Orange Co (p692) states that
Jonathan Van Tuyl, whose name appears in the cattle records of Minisink soon after the Revolution, was an early settler of Greenville. He was the father of Arthur Van Tuyl. There is a stone house now standing in Clark's district and owned by Ira Hallock which is supposed to have been built before the Revolution and known as the Van Tuyl homestead.
Jonathan Van Tuyl had at least two sons, John and Arthur. John and Arthur are listed as signers of the Revolutionary Association of Minisink District, May 24, 1775 (Ruttenber and Clark, p66) and are given as the witnesses to the will of John Wells, Orange Co, May 30, 1776. John Van Tuyl is listed on the Tax Assessment Roll of Sept 1776 for Minisink (p704). The first town meeting for Minisink was held at the home of John Van Tuyl on April 1789 and John Van Tuyl was elected the first constable. At subsequent town meetings in 1790 and 1791 he was elected commissioner of highways (p663).
John Van Tuyl is listed as serving in the Revolutionary War in the Levies under Col. Malcolm and Graham and is given as a lieutenant in the Minisink company in Col Allison's regiment of 1775 from Orange Co (New York in the Revolution, p77 and 81; Ruttenber and Clark p48). Arthur Van Tuyl is listed as serving as a lieutenant in the Third Regiment of the Orange Co Militia in 1786. (New York in the Revolution, p256; Council of Appointment of State of New York, 1783-1821, vol 1 p80).
Arthur Van Tuyl died in testate* in Orange Co in 1794. Letters of Administration for his estate were granted to John Van Tuyl as his brother (Goshen, NY, Book B, p82, June 13, 1794). Nothing is known of his wife or children, if any.
John Van Tuyl (b. ca 1745) died in testate in 1805, Minisink, Orange Co. The Letters of Administration state "to Susannah Van Tuyl, the widow, Daniel Van Tuyl, the son, and William Bodle, Esq., a brother-in-law of John Van Tuyl, late of the town of Minisink in the county of Orange", dated 9 Nov 1805 (Book C, p157). John Van Tuyl is recorded in the 1790 (p143) and 1800 (p320) census of Orange Co, Minisink. According to census tabulations, he had at least five sons and three daughters.
The will of Nathaniel Owen of Wallkill, Orange Co, NY (Book B, p324) made 23 April 1796 and probated 3 May 1802 names (among others) Susanna, wife of John Van Tuyl, and Sarah, wife of William Bodle. Nathaniel's wife's name is not given.
Two sons of John and Susannah (Owen) Van Tuyl have been identified, Daniel and Nathaniel (Cramer-Van Tuyl, Addenda to Van Tuyl Genealogy, NY Public Library).
* In testate - 1) Not having made a will or a valid will before death. 2) Not legally divested or disposed of by a will.
