when his brother, A.B. Shaw, wrote a letter to Cassius Bagley "Brother Fred Shaw was over to treat me yesterday. An Osteopathic Physician for 33 years in Hollywood, he has five married daughters and 2 grandchildren.
BIOGRAPHY: History of Hollywood, CA R979.41 pa1 V2 pg 102 at LA Co. Library. Dr. Alonzo Frederic Shaw, D.O. who is the oldest practicing osteopath in Hollywood in length of service, and who has earned a high reputation in his chosen profession, came here in 1905. He was born in Tipton, IA, Feb 6, 1976, the son of Alonzo and Almira (Bagley) Shaw. He is of old American stock on both the paternal and maternal sides. His mothers first American ancestor came to Providence, Rhode Island Colony about 1650; a great grandfather was a major in the Revolutionary War, his grandfather was a farmer in New York State. His father was a surveyor and came to Iowa in 1843. Later in life he went into the mercantile business and became one of the most important citizens in Tipton. He served as Postmaster and during the Civil War was clerk of the County Court. He lived there for sixty years. Both parents came to Hollywood in 1907 and are now deceased.
The present Dr. Shaw graduated form high school in his native town and spent nearly four years at the State College of Iowa, leaving in his senior year to take part in the Spanish American War. He served in the 49th Iowa Volunteers and saw service in this country and Cuba, remaining in the army for over a year. After his discharge from military serv. he entered the S.S. Still College of Osteopathy at Des Moines, IA, graduating in 1902, and returning there two years later for a post graduate course. He came to Hollywood thirty two years ago and has remained here ever since. In addition to building up a large practice he has been affiliated with the community through his identity with Hollywood institutions.
He was a charter member of the original Hollywood Club, and an early member of Hollywood Camp No. 83, Spanish American War Veterans. Dr. Shaw married in IA to Agnes King who comes form a pioneer family of that state. Dr. and Mrs. Shaw have the following children: Joyce (Mrs. Jess Waters); Carol King (Mrs. Frank Walton) and Marlys (Mrs. Ernest Pendleton). All the daughters were born in Hollywood, except Mrs. Dixon, and all were graduates of Hollywood High School. Mrs. Waters graduated from UCLA and was a schl teacher before her marriage. Dr. Shaw's favorite sports are fishing, hunting and motoring.
